About Me

Hi everyone, welcome to my Best Kitchen Knives website! I first got into cooking in college, when I couldn’t get a dorm assignment due to overcrowding and ended up living in a co-op. Everyone had to put in five hours of work a week as part of the low rent deal, and cooking was the best shift! No one really wanted to clean the kitchen after enough food for one hundred and fifty college students was made, after all.

After college, I continued dabbling in cooking, spurred on by watching the original Iron Chef program. I tested different recipes from cookbooks and the internet as it gained it popularity. Through it all, my trusty chef knife from my college years kept me company – I still have it to this day! I don’t use it as much as I used to – but wielding it still brings back the nostalgia.

Over the years I’ve learned a lot more about kitchen knives, using them, maintaining them, sharpening them… and I want to help other home cooks and chefs find the best kitchen knives for their needs, and provide updates on new knives, maintaining them, and cooking great food with them for years to come.

A Little Story About My Kitchen Knife Experience.

As a freshman, when I first stepped into the restaurant-grade kitchen in the co-op I lived in, I was overwhelmed. It was enormous, with stainless steel appliances and counter tops glinting everywhere – a far cry from the kitchen my mother cooked in. I’d never really cooked in mass quantities before, only helping out at home. A guy with a beard and an apron came up to me and asked me to chop the onions and garlic to prepare for dinner. No problem, right? I looked over and saw an entire crate of onions and at least two dozen heads of garlic. Problem.

I cried a lot that afternoon, and I smelled so strongly of garlic for the rest of the week vampires would have run. I also picked up a few cuts on my hands from having to forcefully chop my way through the onions and garlic. The following week, the same guy asked me to help him chop carrots and potatoes alongside him. I noticed that he wasn’t using one of the white handled, cheap knives the kitchen was stocked with. His knife was a thing of beauty, and he cut through the carrots and potatoes with hardly any effort! I decided then and there that I had to know more, and asked the guy for help.

A week later, I drove to a place selling knives and bought the recommended Henckel’s 7 inch Santoku chef knife. I As soon as I started using it to cut through piles of onions, garlic, celery, etc., I fell in love with the feel of it, and I never went back to using the awful knives in the kitchen.
